The Citizens Advice websites are also a helpful one stop shop with information on a wide range of advice areas, and if you don’t have a local Citizens Advice, they offer national advice lines as listed below (open Monday to Friday 9 to 5) as well as online chat functionality.

There are a number of online benefit calculators available which are very user friendly and can help to give people an idea of what they may be eligible for. Some of the leading options available are:

In terms of national services, as well as the generic Citizens Advice number, there is a specific helpline for those who are considering applying for Universal Credit called Help to Claim:

Money Advice Service – debt advice finder, information on a range of types of debt and options for dealing with debt.

Citizens Advice have lots of relevant information including on how to deal with different types of debt, including sample letters to creditors on their respective web pages.

StepChange Debt Charity – a leading provider of telephone and online debt advice to people across the UK.

National Debtline – provide telephone and online debt advice to, plus fact sheets, sample letters and the ‘Dealing with Debt’ guide

Business Debtline – provide debt advice for the self-employed in England, Wales and Scotland with Advice NI providing a similar service in Northern Ireland.

PayPlan – provide debt advice online or over the phone to people across the UK.
